Why Google Wins - Riding the Wave to Success

Companies and governments all over the world, and to the greatest extent in the United States, are wrestling with and agonizing over WHAT TO DO - the climate is changing! the ice is melting! Of course these are major problems that need to be dealt with speedily.

But, paralysis in fear never was a good way to escape a threat, whether the threat was a bear running after you through the woods, or a planet's climate heating up with unacceptable upper limits.

Enter Google into the picture. Not long ago, they let it be known that they would be significant investors in alternative, renewable energy sources. No hemming, no hawing. They did a clear analysis, and decided it was a move that would benefit them both financially and image-wise. Normally such thinking only comes out of think-tanks. An example of the latter is the generally optimistic Rocky Mountain Institute. That is, they are optimistic if we will just pull our heads out of the sand. But look for bold leaders in government and industry, and they are few. Richard Branson comes to mind, and Al Gore (unfortunately too quiet during his vice-presidency).

Now it appears that Google is already shaking things up. The latest announcement is that one of the companies they have backed has developed a technology that produces solar panels that are more durable, faster to churn out, and far cheaper than any solar panels produced before. In fact, the claim is that they will create energy at a lower cost than the "gold" standard when it comes to cost, namely, coal.

Why is much of the rest of industry still hemming and hawing. For what in the world are these leaders of industry waiting? I do not believe it was rocket-science that caused Google to leap into the new opportunities of 21st-century energy and environmental issues.

No, it was clear thinking. We live in a time in which clear thinking is essential. It is a time for change to occur, and it will occur, but the question is how quickly, and how effectively. We need true leaders, whether they are active in political, scientific, or business undertakings. It is time for a range of electric vehicles, municipally-sponsored bicycle paths, alternatives to car commuting, re-worked power plants using modern technology, and more. And these opportunities for the most part improve economics, health, and quality of life. Where is the problem? Is it fear of the initial costs? If that was it, then no new homes and skyscrapers would be built unless fully pre-paid.

I salute Google, and for the moment forget their entanglement with China and human rights. For the moment, I am happy to see them take on the climate and energy challenge and find a solution that appears to be a big winner. Maybe there will be more coming from them, and from other leading companies, in the not-too-distant future.
